Looking back at the things I’ve learned and the work I’ve developed in the past
9 months of the program, I feel my skill set and knowledge has expanded in
ways I had not anticipated. In particular, the diverse courses and perspectives
provided space and resources to explore alternative paths and applications
to design and making. I would like to continue exploring some of these new
approaches to design, which include:
Design as research, a process to generate new knowledge
Design as a tool for speculation and discussion on possible futures
Reflective design and design ethnography
Following this masters, I would like to focus more of my energy on exploring
design research and design processes. I am less interested in designing new
things, but using design as a method to improve inclusivity, accessibility, and
diversity within design systems.
Another important understanding I had during the program was a need for
holistic approaches to integrating design with traditional crafts. These two
practices, which have largely been separate in my mind, are now forming
connections and context within my process. In my final project for the
MDEFest, I am exploring the connections between craft and design in the
context of tools around the rituals of food.
